How it started ## Pest control grew out of the building work I did not set out to be a pest controller. It came out of the properties I was already working on. For more than ten years I worked as a heritage restoration builder in Cornwall — organic farms, listed buildings, old cottages and estate properties that needed doing properly rather than quickly. That work takes you into roof voids, cellars, cavity walls and outbuildings, which is exactly where pest problems live. Clients started asking me to sort things out while I was already on site. Outdoor kitchens with rats coming in off the yard. Wedding venues with wasps over a marquee entrance. Food operations that needed someone reliable rather than a franchise van. It grew naturally from there into Pest Management Cornwall. The building background is still the most useful thing I have. I read a property the way I used to survey one — where the slate has lifted, where a cavity runs, where a lodge base has been undermined — rather than just treating the droppings in front of me. Proofing the hole is what stops the second call. Humane trapping and live catch are how I prefer to work. Bait blocks come out only where the situation genuinely calls for it or a client specifically asks, and where somebody would rather animals were not dispatched on their ground, I do that off site. I keep bees myself, so bees get relocated to a hive instead of being killed — swarms and established colonies both. Grey squirrels and rabbits are dealt with by live trapping or a legal sub-12 ft/lb air rifle, which is quiet enough to use on hotel grounds, golf courses, lodge parks and new tree planting without anybody noticing. Most of that happens in the evening or out of hours, when the ground is quiet. I work my own local patch out of Par, St Austell, minutes from St Austell.
